The Evolution Of Pizza Delivery

Since pizza delivery was first started, pizzas were transported and delivered in simple cardboard "pizza boxes."  This is essentially the only constant in pizza delivery. Every other aspect has improved over time to facilitate both ordering and delivery of the perfect pizza.

The menus of pizza and sandwich shops are also constantly be expanded to offer a greater selection, both to expand their customer bases and to meet the dietary needs of some pizza lovers who might otherwise be left out when it's time to order pizza.

How Has the Ordering Process Evolved with Technology?

Before the introduction of computers, pizza orders were taken over the phone or in person, written by hand. Order slips were then given to the pizza chefs to make and customize the pizzas, then taken by the delivery driver along with the order to collect the money upon delivery.

Orders are still often taken by phone but are processed through a computer terminal. When the order is complete, a label is printed with all of the details of both the order and the customer, including the phone number and address and any notes that may help with directions for the driver. This label is attached to a pizza box and the order is shown on a monitor for both pizza makers and drivers to determine the order's place in the schedule.

As the orders are completed, the drivers will take them according to the earliest times on the monitor to ensure that the oldest orders get delivered first.

Ordering is also available online through most major pizza chains, with online orders assimilated into the schedule of production and delivery according to time ordered.

How Have Payment Options Improved?

Customers can now pay in advance with credit cards, either in the store, over the phone, or online. This is a major plus for drivers, who are often faced with carrying cash for providing change or customers who find that they don't have enough cash for their order only after the driver has already arrived. Customers can also add a tip to their credit card or pay it in cash upon delivery. This is also a major plus for drivers who depend on tips for a significant amount of their income.

How Are Pizzas Kept Hot During the Delivery Process?

Pizzas are still delivered in cardboard boxes, but the boxes are inside insulated bags that have heating elements inside. When drivers return from deliveries, the bags are plugged into multiple power strips inside the store to heat them for the next delivery.

How Have pizza and Sandwich Shops Changed Their Menus or Practices?

Many pizza and sandwich shops offer healthier choices such as whole grain and gluten free options, as well as desserts for those who don't have an issue with a little bit of indulgence. Pizza shops offer an ever-expanding array of crusts and toppings, along with many combinations of toppings that are created by the shops themselves. Most pizza and sandwich shops offer veggie options for those who don't eat meat, and separate preparation utensils for customers who can't be exposed to foods such as pork or beef for religious reasons.

Pizza and sandwich shops realize the importance of service in a crowded field of providers, so they are constantly striving to improve the customer experience in the hope that a new customer becomes a lifetime customer.
